No matter how strict our diet is, we’re going to have cheat days and give in to cravings. The key is to do this in moderation. A good way to achieve this goal is to know what snack foods will provide your body with energy without the sugar crash or any other negative impacts.

Cooperstown Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has five healthy alternatives to enjoy when you’re craving something salty or sweet.

  • Jerky

Now before you run to the store, know that not all jerky is created equal. Some are loaded with salt and sugar. You’ll want to look for ones that have healthy fats like omega-3s and don’t contain nitrates. Turkey jerky is generally a good option.

  • Chips

Yes, that’s right, chips can be an okay snack, but the problem with store-bought brands are unhealthy additives and loads of salt for preservatives. The way to combat this is to make your own chips! Thinly slice potatoes, sweet potatoes, or even veggies like zucchini or carrots and either use your air fryer or bake in the oven until crispy.

  • Crackers

You can grab crackers off the shelf but look for ones with whole grain, are low in sodium, and contain more than three grams of fiber.

  • Nuts

Nuts are packed with vitamins and minerals along with healthy fats and antioxidants. Check the packaging for lightly salted or no salt varieties; avoid flavors like honey-roasted because that’s going to mean extra salt and sugar.

  • Popcorn

Low-salt and low-butter popcorn are fine options, and you can always pop some yourself on the stove, adding some chia seeds or nutritional yeast on top for some added crunch or flavor at no nutritional cost.
